With cropped jet black-hair and a hell of an attitude, Tatsuki has been renowned for her tomboy features and tough attitude since she was small. Her father was an American soldier newly stationed in Japan, who had eloped with a Hawaiian girl back in the States. Despite the unfriendly Japanese atmosphere against gaijins of any kind (especially Americans), the couple kept to themselves and had a girl. The parents even gave her a Japanese name, hoping that it would ensure their baby girl’s future in the foreign country. But without avail, it was enough.

Although not a troublemaker by nature, during her younger school days, Tatsuki was still hauled in the principal’s office weekly for yet another lecture about fighting with her classmates. Sometimes it would be minor reasons, such as that the asses were torturing a cat but most of the times would be nasty rumors about herself and her parents. But whatever the cause, it made Tatsuki’s own reputation as a military brat even worse in addition to the mutual racist opinions from her classmates. This was around the time when she picked up karate and the more defensive/offensive arts with much encouragement from her father and mother, with the both of them worried about Tatsuki’s own safe-being at school.

In this way, enemies were easily made but she also made some friends along the way. Tatsuki finds it hard to open herself to others, since she considers her own sensitive side as a weakness, mostly from what her father told her. Kurosaki Ichigo was such a friend, having met her at a karate dojo they had both joined as children, then becoming her childhood friend despite the fact that he always cried when they sparred. But even so, her closest friend to date is Inoue Orihime, whom she met in middle school. It was the spontaneity and the endless optimism that made Tatsuki wary of the red-headed girl, but most of all it was the kindness and the indifference to Tatsuki’s own that eventually coaxed her to open herself to Orihime and the fact that she was needed to save Orihime from her own strange concoctions of food. It was never brought up that Orihime needed someone to protect her, but Tatsuki was there all the same, having taken up the task herself and treating the girl like her very own sister.

Shortly after freshman year in high school, Tatsuki was then forced to move because of her father’s reassignment back to Hawaii, something that he was looking forward to, since it would mean that Tatsuki would get more time to spend with relatives and people that would accept her. Although she had treated Japan as a foreign land in the beginning, it had grown to her, seeing that she couldn’t deny the streets and city life that she had grown up in. Most of all, she would miss the friends she had made during her years there.

Even though there was distance between her friends and her new residence in Hawaii, through the modern communication available to her, Tatsuki was still able to contact her friends, especially keep in touch with Orihime. Recently, because of longing to be around familiar people again (and her distrust in Ichigo to take care of Orihime enough), she applied to the Mishima University and was accepted.
